Ticked off with Ticks?

What are ticks?

Ticks are small parasites that attach to pets and humans by the way of large jaws and feed on blood. The most common species in the UK is the sheep tick (often referred to as the ‘castor bean tick’) which can resemble a small bean when well fed. During this process ticks can transmit nasty potentially life-threatening diseases to ourselves and our pets.

They can be found living amidst grass and plants, waiting to leap onto a passing host. Once attached and feeding commences they can transmit nasty diseases to ourselves and our pets and grow rapidly.

What should I do if I find a tick on my pet?

Firstly, do not simply pull the tick off as this may cause the head and jaws to remain buried within the skin thereby causing potential infection.

Safe removal of ticks involves twisting at the level of the neck of the tick with a tick removing tool. You can consult your veterinarian on how to perform this or alternatively this can be undertaken by your vet. Tick tools are available from our online shop! Take a look!

We are seeing increasing numbers of ticks in the UK, therefore it is more important than ever to protect your pets.

Have a chat with your veterinarian to discuss the options for tick treatment and prevention.
